So Texas did what I expected, and passed a constitutional
amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman (76% for to 24%
against), though true to painfully humorous Texas politics, the wording is vague enough that it
may very well invalidate common law marriage (or more), too. One small
consolation is that Travis county (where I live) was 40% for and 60% against and
the only county in the state that overall voted against the amendment.
In contrast to Texas, Maine kept its
statewide anti-discrimination law that covers sexual orientation (roughly
55% to keep and 45% to repeal). It is somewhat sad that they had a referendum
on it at all, but I think they did the correct thing by keeping the law.

A snippet of irc to add a little perspective to your day...
04:17PM <NconWork> the opteron box decompresses a source tree tarball
really fast.
04:53PM * Rab marvelling at how nonsensical that sentence would have sounded
50 years ago.
04:57PM <Cavorite> heh
04:58PM <Cavorite> "so wait, you have this box? and you say you put
things in it and decompress em? a tree that grows balls of tar?"
04:58PM <Cavorite> yehaw, the future will be glorious

Just a quick post...
Today, Nikon announced new camera gear, the D200 and a new macro flash.

This past weekend was a very good one (and my birthday weekend). A certain
cute guy picked it for a visit to Texas. It is an understatement to say
that I enjoyed his visit. :-) On Tuesday, I wasn't really ready
for him to leave or me to have to go back to work. In the time between taking
him to the airport and arriving at work an emotionally raw me thought "fucking
1000 miles..." at least once. No matter what does or doesn't happen, I care
about this one, and wouldn't trade the time I have spent with him.
A few photos from this weekend...
And now for some politics...
First off, early voting has started for Texas' upcoming election considering
nine constitutional amendments. So go register to
vote, find your polling place, and vote early or on November 8.
Recently, a group that appears
to be friendly to the cause for gay rights, noticed that the wording of TX
Proposition 2 could be vague enough to dismantle all marriage in the state.
Upon reading this I had to laugh. It would be amusing for the group supporting
Prop. 2 to shoot themselves in the foot so "eloquently." Almost amusing enough
for me to consider voting for 2. (I voted early, and voted against 2, so don't
worry.) See the NNN
blog and information
on the state of marriage and similar arrangements around the US.

So I helped a friend move most of his belongings that require two people to
carry from his old place to the new (about two houses down the same street).
While I was there, I took the chance to let his cats become comfortable
enough with me for me to give them attention and take a few pictures.
The left picture is Moonface, and the middle is Thistle.
Also, the flickr "addiction" continues,
though I have yet to give in and get a Pro account. Anyway, the rightmost
picture is among several I have uploaded.
Continuing in the photography geek vein, I also recently read a review of
the Nikon D2X. It is far more
camera than I would want to pay for, or could justify "needing." But it does
have some nifty features. :)
Finally, a bit related to Mother Nature... First an interesting view of
the planet we call home. And second, pictures relating to
Hurricane Katrina.

I was about to write this entry earlier... Really... :) Then I
became distracted by Flickr again (it has
happened before, months ago). This time I even uploaded some photos. Said photos still
need tags and descriptions, but that'll come in time.
In other news, I went on vacation about two weeks ago. My trip was to Maine
to visit my mom and to Chicago
to meet a certain boy. ;) To be
brief, I had a very good time. There are photos, of
course, though not many from Chicago (*wink*).
Most of you who were curious have already bugged me, but for those that
haven't, my stop in Chicago was a first date, though he and I have been
communicating for a good while now. I have fond memories and can be happy
with just that visit. Given the distance there is no telling what, if
anything, may happen. Despite my continuing to be as rational as I can about
it, I have my hope for something more, though again, I have no idea of the
what, when, where, or how. For the time being, I enjoy our interaction, so
I have no complaints.
I do have an amusing, vacation-related anecdote to share. I was out of Texas
for about eight days, during which I did no driving. Upon my return, the first
four or five times I was driving myself around town,
I was surprised to see
Texas license plates. This was followed by the requisite internal "duh!" I
don't know what was different about this trip, as I've been out of Texas for
longer periods without similar occurrence.

Thanks to Google Sightseeing
I just found that Google Maps has added satellite imagery for much of the
world. They do not have map data for most of it, so knowing the geography
for the area at which you are looking is useful. At any rate, I was able to
scroll past parts of Japan and Spain. I foresee an hour or more of upcoming
entertainment.
In other news, is it bad, for several reasons, to be very ready for
upcoming vacation? ;)
