Well, it is ordered. After having my D70 stolen, and then hearing of the impending D70s, and waiting for the release of the D70s, and waiting for it to be in stock; I received an in-stock note via email late yesterday and went to click "buy." :-) Presuming it ships today, I should have it, at the latest, on Tuesday. Now all I need to do is find a replacement tripod I like. Speaking of Tuesday, I should also have two rolls of new pictures from the SRT-102 back and online around then.

In other, not too interesting news, I've finally had time to get back to doing some needed, but not urgent, security updates at work. It is nice to have something more interesting to do (security updating RedHat 7.3 installs) than the usual Windows support. *cough* Stupid MS Access.

In light of recent events, I've considered going around actively reminding people that the State of Texas has declared me unfit to be near children. Oh, and if you're married, be careful, I'm devastating to the survival of your wedded bliss. Yeah, just a <sarcasm type="biting">bit</sarcasm> antagonistic, but in an odd way, it sounds like fun. I know being antagonistic is not the best method, but, to put it mildly, after a lifetime of effectively personal attacks, I'm more than a little peeved.

In other news, I've been brainstorming on how I want to implement my favorite photos gallery. As soon as I have enough free time to actually work on it, something should appear.

It has again been a while since I had much to say here. Unfortunately I don't have good news to share (though 'tis not horrible either). In summary, while I was downtown here in Austin to see a movie with some friends, my car was vandalized and my cameras (Nikon D70 and Minolta SRT-101) as well as my laptop (an older Dell) and a friend's laptop (a recent Thinkpad) were stolen.

I immediately filed a police report and later updated it with the serial numbers that we knew. I've gotten the car repaired (and had some other work it needed done at the same time). No one lost wallets and the car was otherwise left alone. So, it could have been worse. One of the earliest thoughts I had was that all the stuff is replaceable, but suddenly I had a bunch of stuff to do (i.e. hassle to go through). I find that thought interesting in that I value my time and stress level over money and stuff.

So far, I have replaced the Minolta with a very similar SRT-102 (still a fully manual film SLR) and have re-bought the various tools I lost. I have resurrected my even older Pentium II based Thinkpad. Now I'm just waiting to either get the new Nikon D70s or a D70 on sale. In the meantime I'll be going about things as usual and having fun with film. :-) Speaking of film, the scans from the test roll of film from the SRT-102 are online.

Woot! (Yes, I did just type that in my journal.) The new photo gallery navigation and features are now online. :-) One project off the list.

Now for some humor. This quote, which reminded me of a similar discussion I had with a friend a year or two ago, was pasted into an IRC channel I'm in by a friend a week or two ago:

04:34PM <volkadav> "I love those metal-plastic IBM keyboards. You can kill people with them. It hurts to punch them. And, while some keyboards go *clicky* while you're typing, they go CLICKY, MOTHERFUCKER. I imagine Samuel L. Jackson would have one of these."
04:35PM <volkadav> amen. (quoth slashdot)

On a not-so-fun note... I was thinking late last week about something another friend has mentioned a couple of times over the last year. His theory is that privacy and human rights and similar things are going to get a lot worse in the United States before they get better, so we might as well accept that fact and help them get worse so that the getting better is accelerated. I'm not sure I agree, but I've felt more lately like I do than before...

Whee...first entry of 2005. I have a list of things to write about or note, but have an anecdote from yesterday evening instead. I was reminded of a nice thing about Austin. I was sitting at Zen on South Congress reading and eating when Leslie walked in. One of the people on shift greeted him by name. None of the patrons found this at all odd. Now, for this to be cool/amusing, you have to know about Leslie. :-) For those of you in Austin, this will make sense. For those of you who aren't and/or who don't know, I'll let you research or ask.

Also, I have finally been making interface improvements to the photo galleries. They should finally be online soon. Really...

I'm still awake (from Friday) and at Mojo's finishing up a couple of mini-projects. I recently bought USB 2.0 hardware for my laptop and one of the desktop systems at home. With that and a ~$20 multi-format flash reader I can grab photos from the camera's CF card much more quickly (all my other methods for reading said CF card are USB 1.1). And speaking of photos, I was at Mt. Bonnell again semi-recently. I posted a couple of my favorites from that photos shoot to a LiveJournal community. Enjoy!

And yes, UI improvements to the photos section of this website are still in progress. Though I have decided to add a view with EXIF data and back/forward links. That way you can navigate based on whichever thumbnails you like or want to see, or you can move through a gallery sequentially. This will appear when the choose-your-gallery-based-on-description stuff appears.

I have several friends who are currently rather unhappy with each other over how an old situation ended. I know it isn't fun. I know there was disrespect on various sides. However, from what I can tell, things will not get better until you are all adults about it and communicate (no matter how difficult/annoying that is). Until there is communication things will stay at the current stalemate, or so it would appear to me anyway. You could even involve a moderator or two or three if that'll help.

So the photo galleries are online finally. I have some further ideas in my head (and have had some suggestions) for ways to improve the interface, so it should get better. In the meantime enjoy.

And, as I was driving home this evening, I saw all of the stoplights on Guadalupe from 26th to 21st on yellow blink. This may be a change from the earlier light programming (as done by the city), but the amusing thing to me was that all the yellow lights in that stretch are still using bulbs instead of LED arrays. If I remember correctly, the red and green are all LED arrays in that area. I wonder why the city chose to leave yellow that way (as other areas already have yellow converted over to LEDs)? Mostly it was nifty to see all the bulbs building up to full brightness, then fading quickly out, and back again, which I now very rarely see elsewhere in Austin.

And now, sleep for me.

I keep becoming curious enough to consider reading email that isn't mine, though no matter how much I joke about being a BOFH, I consider myself to be ethical, and won't.

In other news, a story I referenced in my previous entry has further developments. "Share and enjoy!"

I have two quick links that I've been meaning to pass on for the past week. The first is another bit about electronic voting, this time in Florida. The second is regarding free speech at the DNC, which I know many other people have mentioned before. Such a "nifty" country, this is, at times.

On another note, photo galleries are still in progress... (Yes, I know I've been saying that for a while now, but they will get done.)

Finally, you might check out the second TMBG site at which you can download copies of most (all?) of their recent live shows and several of their albums. (I just grabbed the Austin show from July 16, 2004.)

Current music: TMBG live from Stubb's in Austin, TX
